Considering Dental Implants?
Are you seeking an alternative to dentures and bridges for tooth replacement? Since implants fuse to your jawbone, they can last a lifetime, unlike bridges, which typically last only 5 to 10 years. Unlike dentures and bridges, dental implants offer stability without damaging existing teeth.
How is the dental implant procedure performed?
Dental implants are surgically placed in your jawbone to replace missing teeth, providing both position and function. As the titanium integrates with the jawbone, the implants remain stable over time and do not cause damage to the supporting tissue. In cases of insufficient bone to support the implant, a bone graft can be performed to build up new bone at the site.
Dental implants might be the right choice for you if you:
- Are missing teeth in one or more areas of your mouth
- Have sufficient tissue to support the implants
- Have healthy gum tissue
- Prefer a permanent solution over removable dentures
Potential health risks of dental implants:
Like any dental procedure, dental implants carry certain risks, including:
- Infection at the implant site
- Injury or damage to nerves related to surrounding teeth, jaw, and lips
- Sinus issues if dental implants in the upper jaw encroach into a sinus cavity
The dental implant procedure requires a team of skilled professionals. At Smile Up Dental, we have specialists who are highly experienced in this procedure. Since dental implants involve at least one surgical procedure, a comprehensive assessment is necessary to prepare for the process, including:
- Comprehensive dental examination involving dental X-rays and CT scans
- Review of medical history, including any illnesses and medications
- Surgical plan tailored to your specific needs, considering factors such as the number of teeth to be replaced and the condition of your jawbone and remaining teeth.
Placing The Dental Implant
The implant surgeon incurs your gum to uncover the bone during the procedure. Soft tissue flaps extend to the bone where the dental implant metal post will be drilled. Since the post will represent the tooth root, it must be deep in the bone according to the measurements. At this point of the procedure, you will have an implant in the bone, completing the surgical phase.
Adding The Prosthetic Crown
Once the gums have healed, further appointments will be arranged with the dentist to take impressions. These impressions are used to make the crown a tooth-shaped permanent cap. The crown will not be placed until the bone has completely healed and is healthy enough to support the load of the new crown.
Our Smile Up Dental Clinic Dentist can select artificial teeth that are removable, fixed, or a mixture of both. Removable teeth contain artificial teeth surrounded by natural-looking plastic acrylic gum. A fixed tooth is a synthetic tooth screwed into or cemented upon an implant abutment. This seals and secures the implant and meets the final stage of treatment.
What types of dental implants are there?
There are two main types of dental implants:
- Endosteal implants
- Subperiosteal implants
Our dentist will help determine which type of dental implant best suits you.
After Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants require surgery, which demands a series of post-op treatments or follow-ups. While the medication prescribed is meant to work quickly, some discomforts may persist, such as:
- Inflammation of gums and cheeks
- Minimal to severe bruising of the surrounding area
- Pressure or pain at the site of the implant
- Minimal bleeding
